Sheela’s Second Life Sheela (51), a middle-aged resident of Ward 1 in Velloor Grama Panchayat, living in the Kottappurath house, met with a tragic accident when she was hit by a train and was admitted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital with severe injuries. Her right leg had to be amputated, fingers of her left hand were lost, and she sustained serious head injuries.
After being discharged from the Medical College, Sheela faced a very difficult life ahead. In this situation, the Nithya Sahayakan Trust took her into their “Ammaveedu” home. According to palliative nurse Sister Anns from Arunoottimangalam Government Hospital, trust members Anil Joseph, Thomas Anchampillil, and Ammaveedu secretary Sindhu V.K. visited Sheela and gathered details. Realizing her helpless condition, the trust decided to support her.
Sheela is unmarried. Her parents have passed away. One sister is a resident in a mental health care center. Being alone and destitute, Sheela was given a house by her neighbor and teacher, Shanty from Kuzhikkattill. Shanty also provides her with other necessary support.
Since Sheela cannot survive without external help, the trust officials, at the request of Velloor Grama Panchayat President Sony K.K.N., visited her home and took responsibility for her care. Vice President Surendran K.K., Arjunthai Attathil Claramma Babu, Mathruvedi President Ruby Thomas Kuryanthadam, Panchayat members Shalini Mohanan, M.R. Shaji, Sindhu Binoy, K.D. Viswanathan, and palliative nurse Veena led the initiative.
